Penderecki conducts Penderecki

The concerts with works of the Polish composer and conductor Krzysztof Penderecki promise to be a special concert experience with their two Swiss premieres. Also included is the baritone Thomas E. Bauer, whom Pendrecki met by chance. Bauer jumped in at short notice to replace a sick colleague. Since then, Penderecki has always asked Bauer for the baritone parts in his works.

The work of Krzysztof Penderecki can be described as idiosyncratic. He does what seems right to him and is not based on current trends. With a world premiere in 1960 he caused a sensation at the Donaueschinger Musiktagen. He was just 27 years old. Later he turned back to the tonal-romantic language and promptly offended. What triggered the trouble? An ordinary pure triad!

As a curious person, he likes to travel. He and his wife have long been fascinated by China and regularly visited it. From there he brought the sound of the Chinese double-sided violin Erhu, which he incorporates in the interludes of his Sixth symphony, even if the music does not sound Chinese.

The program also includes two instrumental concerts: the viola concerto for cello and orchestra and the concertino for trumpet and orchestra.
